What usually goes wrong
A dead outlet is often a tripped GFCI somewhere else on the circuit, usually in a bathroom, kitchen, garage or outside. Press reset on every GFCI you can find and check the panel. If the outlet is still dead, or it is loose, cracked or discolored, it needs a repair.
Common wiring jobs include replacing two-prong outlets with grounded or GFCI-protected ones, adding outlets so cords are not running across rooms, dedicated circuits for a window AC, freezer or workshop, EV charger circuits, and ceiling fans on boxes rated to hold them.
Cities and Yolo County require permits for many kinds of electrical work. Ask the electrician whether yours needs one, who pulls it and whether an inspection is part of the price.
